The owner is jamesona dog was killed by an LAPD officer Canoga Park Apartment Complex On June 13, she recalled her beloved dog as a “lovable, happy, innocent dog who was deeply cherished,” emphasizing that he “never showed aggression To anyone. Jameson was shot when police responded to a report of a woman screaming in their home. However, the screams did not come from any danger, but from the excitement of the New York Knicks winning the 2026 NBA Finals.

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived at the complex and spoke with Jameson’s owner, Mary Massey, asking her to protect the dog. When she closed and reopened the door, 2.1⁄2-year-old Kim St. Bernard Doodle walked out of the apartment. Police said the dog charged at an officer, causing them to shoot him.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Mary said: “I don’t remember him barking. I really don’t remember. Jameson didn’t bark when someone rang the doorbell or knocked on our door. It all happened in a matter of seconds. I was home alone with Jameson and my two cats when I responded to a noise complaint for the police. Jameson slipped out from between my legs and within seconds, he was gone.”
“Within seconds, my life changed forever,” the heartbroken dog mom added.
“I want to know why this happens”
Mary is now calling for a “transparent and impartial investigation into what happened that night”.
“What I want most is the truth,” she said. “I want to know why this happens and if it can be avoided.”
The incident sparked a backlash on social media and the LAPD was criticized for its actions. A heartbreaking video circulating on social media shows Mary sitting on the floor next to Jameson’s body and crying.
However, despite people’s anger, Mary said officers showed empathy and compassion in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“I believe a sergeant or other senior officer came over to talk to me about the incident. He expressed his condolences for my loss and asked me to return to my apartment so they could begin their investigation. Throughout the evening, two female officers stayed with me at my door. They were genuine, compassionate, and expressed their apologies multiple times for what had happened. Their kindness and compassion meant so much to me during such an unimaginable time, and I am truly grateful for their support,” Mary said.
“I’m still trying to cope with the unimaginable pain of losing my child,” she added. “For Jameson, justice means accountability. It means ensuring that no other family has to experience this kind of heartbreak and trauma.”
“He had a gentle spirit and a goofy streak.”
Mary remembers Jameson as “the sweetest, cutest, most playful little teddy bear” who was “a big part of my daily life.”
“He brought joy wherever he went. I worked at a Kaiser Permanente near my home. My son would drive me to work most days and pick me up. Jameson would always come for a ride. He would stick his head out the window and people would just fawn over him. Ask to pet him and take pictures. His sweet-natured, goofy personality makes people smile instantly. Everyone in our building knows his name,” she said.
“He loved to cuddle, play and be close to me. We also had two cats, and I always say I love all my kids so much. Jameson was more than just a pet; he was family,” Mary recalled, adding that the tragedy happened “on what should have been a happy moment when I was celebrating the New York Knicks’ championship.”
