Leh (Ladakh): Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena on Monday approved the notification for the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, a move aimed at strengthening grassroots governance and decentralization.Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass are the new administrative districts, taking the number of administrative districts in the Union Territory to seven.“This is a historic day for Ladakh. I have approved the notification for the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, fulfilling the aspirations and long-pending demands of the people of Ladakh. With the creation of five new districts – Nubra, Sham, Changtang, Zanskar and Dras – Ladakh will now increase its number to seven from the existing two districts. The development is in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to develop and prosper Ladakh. ” Lieutenant Governor Saxena said in X.“This transformative decision, approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the leadership of Home Minister Shri @AmitShahji in August 2024, will strengthen grassroots governance, decentralize administrative powers and ensure faster delivery of public services to the people of Ladakh, especially in remote areas,” he added.Saxena said the creation of new districts would also create new avenues for growth, employment and entrepreneurship, besides bringing governance closer to citizens. “I reiterate my commitment to ensure that every citizen of Ladakh benefits from this historic decision as we move towards a brighter, stronger and more prosperous future together,” he said.Ladakh became a Union Territory on October 31, 2019. It is famous for its remote mountain beauty and unique culture.
