What is a Brown Recluse and is its bite dangerous?

Rittenhouse, who is popular in right-wing circles, noted that a Brown Recluse bit him. The brown recluse spider is one of two venomous spider species found in North America.

Also known as Loxosceles reclusa, it is found in the South, West, and Midwest. according to National Center for Biotechnology Information These spiders can be found in dark places such as under rocks, in the bark of dead trees, in attics, basements, cupboards, drawers, boxes, sheets, or similar places.

“Dermatonecrotizing arachnidosis is localized tissue damage caused by brown recluse spider envenomation,” it states. “The venom of brown recluse spiders is cytotoxic and hemolytic,” it added. NCBI notes that, in layman’s terms, a brown recluse bite may cause “urticaria.”

However, if the bite is more severe, the following may occur. Initially, things are not painful, but over the next two to eight hours, things become more and more painful. Symptoms include malaise, nausea, headache, and myalgia. According to NCBI, the bite site contained two small puncture wounds surrounded by red spots. From there, “the center of the bite will become pale and the outer edges will become red and swollen,” NCBI notes. They added, “This is associated with vasospasm, causing the pain to become more severe.”

Blisters are expected to form over the next few days, and the center of the ulcer is expected to turn “blue/purple with a hard, star-shaped depression in the center.” The skin may then slough off and the wound will eventually heal, but this can take several weeks, according to NCBI.

Treatment for a brown recluse spider bite includes “elevating the limbs above the heart or at least in a neutral position.” Then, according to NCBI, applying ice packs to the area should help stop the necrotic process. The wound must be cleaned with soap and water. Pain management may be required, and in some cases, patients may require opioids. According to NCBI, antibiotics are only needed when associated cellulitis is present.
