Kristen Welker has been married to marketing executive John Hughes since 2017. The couple met in Philadelphia in 2014 through mutual friends and were in a long-distance relationship before getting married.
According to Hughes’ LinkedIn page, he has worked in the marketing and advertising industry for several years.
Hughes won Welker’s heart with a handcrafted presidential trivia crossword puzzle using clues he wrote himself, and the two went on a romantic second date. Welker arrived at the appointment two hours late after reporting the breaking news.
“That’s the moment he grabbed me,” she said. “As a White House correspondent, it was very touching, and it made him unlike anyone I’d ever dated,” Welker said.
Hughes proposed to Welker in Washington, D.C., and the two were later married at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue in Philadelphia.
The couple welcomed their first child, Margot, in 2021, People reported.
Welker has spoken openly about her birth journey and the challenges she faced before becoming a mother. In interviews with NBC and People magazine, she described parenthood as one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.
In 2024, the family expanded further with the arrival of a second child, a son named John Zachary, born via surrogate.
Welker graduated from Harvard University with a degree in American history. She joined NBC News in 2010 and rose steadily through the ranks, serving as White House correspondent, co-chief White House correspondent and weekend anchor.
Over the past decade, she has covered multiple presidential administrations, moderated nationally televised debates and interviewed some of the country’s most influential politicians, including Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and Joe Biden.
Welker currently serves as host of NBC’s flagship public affairs program “Meet the Press” and is one of the channel’s most recognizable faces.
