Chapman sold a stolen gun to ODU gunman – Authorities allege Chapman stole a gun and sold it to Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a man identified as the ODU gunman and opened fire on March 12 during an Army ROTC course. Chapman stole a gun from a car in Newport News, Virginia, and sold it to Jalloh just days before the shooting that killed ROTC instructor Lt. Col. Brandon Shah and wounded two others.
  3. Chapman faces multiple federal firearms charges — according to court documents, Chapman allegedly purchased three weapons in 2021 that were discovered at the crime scene shortly afterward. Two people were found at the murder scene. The third was confiscated from a drunken person after a public incident. On March 13, law enforcement searched Chapman’s home and found ammunition consistent with the firearm seized in the ODU shooting.
  4. Chapman was not allegedly charged by the Biden administration — Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement that the Biden Justice Department failed to prosecute Chapman for the stolen firearms. “The Biden Justice Department refused to prosecute this man and let him off easily with a warning,” she said. She further criticized the previous administration, saying: “The left’s soft approach to crime cost lives — but the Department of Justice will not tolerate crime, we will punish crime.”
  5. Chapman could face decades in prison – up to 35 years in federal prison if convicted on all counts – but any sentence will ultimately be decided by a judge.
