Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis called it a murder-suicide, adding that it was an ongoing family dispute surrounding a “messy divorce.”
Davis said the family’s two children, who are teenagers, were at the house when the incident occurred. He said it appeared from the scene that Fairfax shot his wife in the basement of the home and then ran upstairs to the master bedroom where he shot himself.
Fairfax faced sexual assault charges years before the murder-suicide. Details and victim accounts have now resurfaced.
Justin Fairfax sexual assault case
In 2019, two women publicly accused Fairfax of sexual assault, accusations that ultimately derailed his political future despite his repeated denials.
Vanessa Tyson’s account
Vanessa Tyson, an associate professor at Scripps College and a researcher at Stanford University, accused Fairfax of sexually assaulting her during the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston. She claimed Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex on her in a hotel room.
Fairfax denies the allegation and insists the encounter was consensual. He later hired the same legal team that represented him during the confirmation process of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Meredith Watson’s accusations
Shortly after Tyson’s accusation became public, Meredith Watson filed another allegation that Fairfax committed rape in 2000 while she was a student at Duke University. She called the incident a “premeditated and aggressive” attack.
Fairfax again denied the claims, saying: “I never forced myself on anyone.”
What Justin Fairfax said
As the allegations surfaced, Fairfax questioned their timing and said they were part of a coordinated effort to oust him. He pointed to the broader political context in Virginia at the time, when then-Governor Ralph Northam was under intense pressure to resign over the racist yearbook photo controversy.
If Northam steps down, Fairfax will become governor.
Fairfax argued that rivals were trying to block the path and claimed the charges were politically motivated.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, no criminal charges were filed and there was no formal legal investigation into wrongdoing.
Even so, the political damage is irreversible. Fairfax refused to resign at the time, but his standing within the Democratic Party deteriorated significantly.
He later ran for governor in 2021, but received only 3.54% of the vote in the Democratic primary, finishing fourth.
Over the next few years, Fairfax maintained his innocence and expressed frustration at how the accusations affected his career.
“There were some real truth-tellers who cut through the political sensationalism and the truth,” Fairfax said. “If it weren’t for what now appears to be false accusations, I would be the only African-American governor in the United States today.”
“A lot of it was because they were trying to discredit me. We have a 400-year history of black men being falsely accused. Once people find out it’s not true, it’s hard to get politicians and journalists to admit they were wrong,” he said.
