'Just a bed and a toilet': Arrested former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has no royal privileges

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted experts as saying that former British prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, will not receive any special treatment during detention and can be legally detained for up to 96 hours.Police commentator Danny Shaw, who spoke to the BBC, said the “absolute maximum” time Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor could be detained was 96 hours, subject to multiple extensions granted by senior police officers and the magistrates’ court. Shaw noted that in most cases, suspects are held for 12 or 24 hours and then charged or released pending further investigation.Shaw said the former prince would be placed in “a cell in the custody unit” with just “a bed and a toilet” where he would remain until he was questioned. He added that “he will not be offered special treatment.”It’s unclear when Andrew was arrested or where he is being held. The arrest comes as Andrew faces increasing scrutiny over his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has always denied the accusations. The latest revelations suggest he shared confidential documents with the late, disgraced financier while serving as Britain’s trade envoy. Earlier, Thames Valley Police said in a statement: “As part of our investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his 60s from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are conducting searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.“The man remains in police custody.“In line with national guidance we will not be naming the man who was arrested. Please also bear in mind that the case is currently ongoing so any publication should be treated with caution to avoid being in contempt of court.”Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said: “Following a thorough assessment, we have now launched an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.“As we work with our partners to investigate this alleged criminal conduct, it is important to protect the integrity and objectivity of the investigation.“We understand there is significant public interest in this case and we will provide an update in due course.”The arrest marks the first time the former royal has been detained.
