Johnny Somali case: US anchor’s mother asks judge for leniency ahead of sentencing in South Korea

The mother of American live broadcaster Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, appeals South Korea The court asked for a lighter punishment for the son. Sentencing is scheduled for April 15, 2026.

Somalia is facing multiple charges in the country after he live-streamed himself disturbing the peace. Dexerto reports that according to lawyers and YouTuber Legal Mind, Somalia’s mother filed a clemency petition on behalf of her son.

Somali faces four charges of interfering with business, two charges of breaching the Minor Offenses Act and two charges of sexual violence offences.

Somalia has been accused of playing offensive noise on a subway, including a speech by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He also allegedly performed a lap dance at a memorial to Korean World War II sex slaves. He was banned from YouTube due to the live broadcast.

Prosecutors in the case are seeking three years in prison, a fine of about 150,000 won (about $100) and registration as a sex offender, according to Complex.

Somalia spoke publicly about the case when he appeared in court last month. He argued with the judge that what he was doing would not get him into legal trouble in the United States.
