Jewelry worth 4 million euros stolen from French museum, investigation continues

Strasbourg: Jewelry worth millions of euros was stolen in a break-in at French luxury glassmaker Lalique on Sunday, the museum and investigative sources said.Sources familiar with the investigation said the group of thieves broke into the museum in Wengen-sur-Model in northeastern France at about 5:30 a.m. local time and went straight to the jewelry room. “About 20 pieces of jewelry were stolen. The damage is being assessed but could amount to millions of euros, possibly close to 4 million euros,” the source said. The museum said it would be closed for several days. The source added: “Alarms were raised but a cleaning woman was first on the scene and called the police as the security company completed its inspection.” The museum, which opened in 2011, is dedicated to Art Nouveau and Art Deco jeweler and glassmaker Rene Lalique.
