New Delhi: The Cabinet on Tuesday approved restructuring and repositioning the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and extending its timeline to December 2028, increasing the total expenditure by about Rs 870 crore. The focus of the restructured JJM 2.0 will be on service delivery, supported by an institutional ecosystem for drinking water governance and sustainable piped drinking water supply. This will be done through a unified national digital framework ‘Sujalam Bharat’, under which every village will be assigned a unique Sujal Gaon/Service Area ID to digitally map the complete drinking water supply system from source to tap.The Rs 870-crore outlay under the scheme includes nearly Rs 360 crore in central assistance, an increase of over Rs 150 crore from about Rs 210 crore sanctioned in 2019-20.The mission aims to provide drinking water to rural households in India through taps.
