New Delhi: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said New Delhi may play a role in promoting peace in West Asia amid the ongoing crisis between Iran and the United States.Asked whether India has a role to play in the West Asian crisis, Rajnath said: “Maybe tomorrow, India will play its role in this crisis and be successful.”
“The prime minister calls on both sides to end the war. Our prime minister takes a very balanced approach to foreign affairs,” he added. This comes as the second round of peace talks between Iran and the United States scheduled to be held in Pakistan has stalled over differences over Iran’s nuclear enrichment program.Earlier in the day, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week extension for negotiations with Iran and made every effort to get both sides back to the negotiating table.Hours after declaring that “bombings are expected,” the US president said he would extend the ceasefire until Iranian negotiators submit a peace proposal. He wrote on the “Truth Society” platform: “Based on the fact that the Iranian government is deeply divided, this is not unexpected and at the request of Pakistan Army Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, we are asked to suspend attacks on the Iranian state until their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”Iran, meanwhile, denied extending the ceasefire was a “tactic to buy time for a surprise attack,” adding that “the time has come for Iran to take the initiative.”“The losing party cannot dictate the terms,” Mahdi Mohammed wrote on social media. “The continuation of the siege must be met with a military response.”
