About 36 hours after the conflict, Trump acknowledged there could be more American casualties. “As far as I’m concerned, three is three too many,” he said of America’s early losses.

He added that forecasts suggested the number “could be higher,” noting, “We expect there will be casualties.”

Still, Trump insisted the Pentagon retained enough troops and weaponry to continue operations “if necessary.”

He did not address concerns among military strategists about maintaining reserves for other potential global hotspots.

Beyond the battlefield timeline, Trump has offered various and sometimes conflicting ideas about what happens next in Tehran.

While he said he was willing to lift sanctions if the new leadership proved cooperative, he stopped short of committing to how the United States would respond if unrest breaks out in Iran.
