ISRO’s MITRA mission is a new project launched by the Indian Space Research Organization to investigate the behavior, performance and dynamics of astronauts in a simulated space flight environment. The MITRA mission will take place in Leh, Ladakh, where participants will be exposed to thin air, cold and isolation, similar to the experience of actual space flight. This is part of a plan to understand the dynamics of human teams working in stressful situations in order to prepare for India’s manned space program ‘Gaganyaan’.The research will focus on how crews work together and communicate with teams on the ground. This is done in partnership with space medical personnel and defense organizations.
Mission MITRA stands for Interoperable Trait Mapping and Response Assessment, which is basically an exercise based on behavioral and operational research. It tests how humans and groups react in situations similar to those experienced in spaceflight.The project involves collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organization and the Indian Air Force’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine. The focus here is on the study of physiological responses, cognitive performance, and interpersonal skills in Gaganyatris and other fieldwork teams.MITRA Mission aims to create structured data on teamwork and adaptability. They are considered a necessary feature of any mission, especially one involving isolation from the outside world.
The experiment was conducted in Leh, located in the Union Territory of Ladakh, at an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters. This is an environment that already has certain characteristics, including lack of oxygen, coldness, and isolation.These environmental factors are thought to be similar to the space flight environment. For example, hypoxia plays a crucial role, particularly in affecting cognitive and physical functions. Using a controlled environment allows scientists to test people’s reactions to such situations without actually going into space.This choice of location complies with international standards for conducting experiments in isolated or high-altitude locations to simulate space missions.
One of the main goals of the Mission MITRA project is to study how crew members communicate under stressful working conditions, including communicating, handling conflict, assuming leadership positions and making decisions.In addition to this, it is also necessary to understand how the ground team communicates with the crew members. In space missions, coordination between team members and ground control stations is crucial because results depend on good communication skills.The experts associated with the project will find patterns in their behavior that help achieve the teamwork goals.

Ltd., a Bengaluru-based startup supporting the operating agreement.The mission was launched through a virtual event in Bengaluru on April 2, 2026. The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials such as Dr V Narayanan, ISRO Chairman and Minister of Space, and representatives from the Manned Space Flight Center and Aerospace Medical Institutions.This multi-agency involvement reflects a coordinated approach to human spaceflight research, combining expertise from the space science, medical and defense sectors.
