assassinated supreme leader Ali Khamenei Experts told The Washington Post that he objected to his son taking power, which he mentioned in his will.

“In Khamenei’s will, he explicitly requested not to name Mojtaba as his successor,” said Khosro Esfahani, research director of the National League for Democracy, an opposition group with ties to Iran’s intelligence services.

“Mojtaba is a despicable young cleric who has achieved nothing in political life,” Esfahani said.

He further claimed that Khamenei believed that his son did not have the experience or ability to govern Iran, adding that after all these years, without the influence of his father’s name, Moitaba would remain insignificant.

Are Iranian clerics unhappy with Mojtaba’s appointment?

Mojtaba was not even formally selected by Iran’s succession council – however, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards pressured the Assembly of Experts during discussions last week, ultimately forcing a vote.

According to Esfahani, Mojtaba did not receive a majority in that vote, but the IRGC secured his appointment, which reportedly led many clerics to boycott the meeting where his selection was announced.

“The conference of experts that was supposed to choose Khamenei’s successor did not vote for Mojtaba,” the expert told The Washington Post. “He faced a lot of resistance, but under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, he was appointed as his successor.”

Trump ‘not happy’ with Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment

Earlier, Trump called Mojtaba’s choice “unacceptable” and said “I’m not happy with him.”

Trump had earlier said Tehran should not appoint a leader without his consent and told Axios that no one would exercise power in Iran without his permission.

At least 49 senior Iranian officials have been killed in U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. Mojitaba’s mother, wife and son also died. According to Iranian media reports, he was also injured in the explosion, but it is not yet certain how serious the injury was.
