Air Force Brigadier General Houston Cantwell, a former F-16 fighter pilot, said it was worth noting that the last time a U.S. fighter jet was shot down in combat was an A-10 Thunderbolt II during the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. Follow real-time updates on the US-Iraq war here.

Behnam Ben Taleblou, senior director of the Iran program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington think tank, told The Associated Press that U.S. aircraft have been flying at lower altitudes, making them easier targets for Iranian missiles.

In this story, we’ll learn all about the F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet.

Everything About the F-15 Jet: Key Features

  • The F-15E Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter aircraft designed for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat, according to the official U.S. Air Force website.
  • Extensive avionics and electronic systems enable the F-15E to operate at low altitudes, day or night, and in all weather conditions.
  • The aircraft is operated by a crew of two, a pilot and a weapons systems officer. It is designed to reach targets over long distances, attack enemy positions on the ground, and return while dealing with threats along the way.
  • According to the New York Times, it can fly at speeds of up to 1,875 miles per hour, or Mach 2.5, and carry a payload of more than 20,000 pounds. The aircraft has been deployed by the US military in Iraq, Libya and Syria.
  • The navigation system combines a laser gyroscope and a global positioning system to track the aircraft’s position at all times.
  • The APG-70 radar allows aircrews to identify ground targets from a distance. After scanning an area, the system allows the crew to maintain an air-to-ground image and then switch back to air-to-air mode to check for threats.
  • The Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared at Night (LANTIRN) system helps aircraft fly at low altitudes, at night and in bad weather. It uses precision-guided and unguided weapons to attack ground targets.
  • The navigation pod includes terrain-following radar that helps pilots fly safely at very low altitudes following guidance displayed on the heads-up display.
  • A key feature of the F-15E is the rear cockpit, where the weapons systems officer sits. Using four screens, officers can view inputs from radar, electronic warfare systems and infrared sensors, track aircraft and weapons status, assess threats, select targets and navigate using digital moving maps.

When was it commissioned?

  • The U.S. Air Force awarded the F-15 contract to aerospace company McDonnell Douglas on December 23, 1969, according to a Marquette University research paper.
  • The F-15A completed its first flight in July 1972.
  • In November 1974, the first Eagle was delivered to the 58th Tactical Fighter Training Wing at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, where training with the F-15A and B models began.
  • According to the U.S. Air Force website, the first F-15 for combat units was delivered to the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia in January 1976.

How many F-15s does the United States have?

  • The U.S. Air Force operates two main models of the Boeing F-15, including a single-seat fighter used for air superiority and a two-seat aircraft used for strike and interception missions. The latest service model, the F-15EX, will enter service in 2024.
  • According to news agency reports, the Air Force has nearly 300 F-15 aircraft of different types. Reuters It reported, adding that more than 1,500 units were produced in total.

How the F-15 jet stacks up against the F-22 and F-35

  • Lockheed Martin’s F-35 is considered the most advanced fighter jet in the U.S. Air Force fleet. It combines stealth characteristics, powerful maneuverability and advanced data systems, allowing it to handle many types of missions. The Air Force currently has more than 300 F-35 jets and plans to purchase 1,763 more.
  • The F-22, on the other hand, is an air superiority fighter developed around a “first strike, first kill” approach. The military has ordered fewer than 200 fifth-generation jets. It can fly at more than twice the speed of sound, or about 1,530 mph (2,460 km/h).
  • Reported by business insider Justin Bronk, a combat airpower researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, quoted from about a decade ago, said the F-15 is large, fast, highly agile and can carry a large number of weapons under its wings in plain sight. He added that this makes it less stealthy, but also means it is ideal for intercepting enemy aircraft.
  • During an interception, Bronk said, pilots need to “stand next to the aircraft, fly side by side, display weapons, maintain an alert frequency, tell them they are being intercepted, they are violating airspace and return immediately.”
  • The report added that the F-22 or F-35 are not suitable for such missions and may not be able to perform them in some cases.
