Permanent Mission of Iran United Nations As tensions between the two countries escalate at the United Nations, Iran accuses the United States of using the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference to distort Tehran’s nuclear program and divert attention from Washington’s own violations. In a statement shared on its officialThe statement also criticized international bodies, saying the UN Security Council, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Director General and the Board of Governors not only “failed to condemn these unlawful attacks but, most regrettably, took actions that reversed the roles of victims and aggressors.”Iran says the United States is portraying its nuclear activities as a threat while using the NPT forum to advance what it calls a politicized narrative and ignore broader disarmament obligations. At the United Nations in New York, Iran’s envoy Amir Saeed Elwani warned that lasting stability in the Gulf required an end to what he called ongoing aggression against Iran, while guaranteeing that such actions would not be repeated and that Iran’s sovereignty would be respected.Speaking at the conference, he said Iran supported freedom of navigation in major waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, but warned that continued military escalation could harm regional and global security. He urged the United Nations Security Council to address the issue.Irwani claimed that since February 28, the United States and Israel have carried out a “widespread and unjustified war of aggression” against Iran in violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, especially Article 2(4), adding that these actions disrupt maritime security. The developments come amid heated exchanges between Washington and Tehran at the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York, with Iran selected as one of the vice-chairmen of the month-long meeting.U.S. official Christopher Yeh criticized Iran’s choice, calling it an “insult” to the treaty. “There is no doubt that Iran has long demonstrated contempt for the non-proliferation commitments of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,” he said, calling the move “extremely shameful and embarrassing for the credibility of this conference.”Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Reza Najafi, dismissed the remarks as “baseless and politically motivated.”“It is untenable that the United States, the only country that has ever used nuclear weapons and continues to expand and modernize its nuclear arsenal… attempts to position itself as the arbiter of compliance,” he said. The dispute comes as the nuclear issue remains at the heart of the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. U.S. President Trump has repeatedly said Iran cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its program is for peaceful purposes.
