In any competition or league with a home-and-away format, teams will usually try to make their home court into a fortress, aiming to score as many points as possible so that their fortunes are not heavily dependent on away results. The Indian Premier League is no exception. As IPL 2026 enters the final stretch of the league stage, the race for playoff spots is getting increasingly fierce, with teams scrambling to gain maximum points from every game and home advantage becoming increasingly decisive.

this intense pulsed light Even with 48 of the 70 league games over and settled, the 2026 standings are still very crowded. While a few teams such as current league leaders Kings XI Punjab and defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore have occupied the top two spots for much of the season so far, there is no clear trend. The point gap between No. 1 PBKS and No. 6 chennai super kings There are only three games left, and each team only has 4-5 games left. In such a tight competition, the remaining home games may ultimately determine the final ranking.

Main form and lower halfLooking at the 48 games played so far, there is a clear trend that the teams competing for the top four (mainly the current top six) have better home records this season. In contrast, the bottom four teams – Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Supergiants – have struggled at home.LSG, who are currently at the bottom of the table, have lost all four of their home games, including a loss to KKR in the Super Over. KKR have won just one of their four matches at the Eden Gardens, while DC have managed just one win in five matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. MI have won two of their six matches in the Wankhede. Poor home performances have left all four teams fighting to stay in the playoffs.LSG and MI can reach a maximum of 14 points – the lowest score for qualification in history – while KKR and DC can reach 17 and 16 points respectively. However, this would require a dramatic shift in form at home.Except for MI, which has only one home game left, other teams still have multiple home games. DC have two home games left, while KKR and LSG have three home games each. Their playoff hopes will likely hinge on how they perform in these games.

Home advantage in top halfIn contrast, top teams take home conditions into full consideration. PBKS has won three of four games at home and needs just two more wins to reach the 17-point mark, a safe margin for playoff qualification, with three home games remaining.RCB’s performance was stronger, losing only one game at home and winning four of five games. There are two home games left that could seal a playoff spot.Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, who each have 12 points, also have a solid home record and will be looking to maximize their remaining home games to their advantage.CSK remain competitive despite finishing sixth mainly due to their strong home form. With two home games remaining, they may need to win both – and possibly all remaining games – to move into the top four.As the league phase draws to a close, one factor is becoming increasingly clear: IPL 2026, the path to the playoffs is taking shape at home.
