Apple is expected to enter the foldable phone segment with a new iPhone model that has been in development for several years. Reports suggest that the device, often referred to as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, may arrive later this year alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. While the company has yet to confirm its plans, new input from China suggests key design changes focus on the hinge.
According to a post shared on Weibo by tipster Fixo Focus Digital, Apple may use 3D printing technology to manufacture the hinge mechanism of its foldable iPhone. The move is expected to help reduce the visibility of creases formed on foldable displays. The hinge plays a big role in how the screen flexes and how noticeable the crease becomes over time.
Apple is no stranger to using 3D printing in its products. The company reportedly uses similar manufacturing methods in components like the Apple Watch case and the USB Type-C port in the latest iPhone models. Applying this process to hinges allows for greater control over structure and precision.
Other smartphone brands are starting to use similar approaches. For example, Oppo introduced 3D printed polymer layers in its Find N6 foldable phone. This layer fills the gap below the folded area, helping to reduce the crease effect on the display.
In addition to the hinge, Apple is also said to be working on the display structure. Reports suggest that the device may feature a double-glazed setup of UTG (ultra-thin glass) and UFG. In this design, the display is between two thin layers of glass. This arrangement prevents direct contact between the screen and hinge when the phone is folded, reducing stress on the panel over time.
Previous reports have also highlighted Apple’s commitment to solving common foldable phone issues, specifically related to screen durability and crease visibility. The company has been testing different designs to improve long-term performance.
There are also signs that Apple is preparing for mass production. The company expects to order up to 20 million foldable display panels from Samsung Display. That would be higher than previous estimates and could indicate expected demand after the device launches.
Currently, the foldable iPhone is expected to launch around the end of 2026, but final details will depend on Apple’s official announcement.
