The November 15, 2024 incident was reportedly organized by the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at the University of Iowa, and a 22-year-old fraternity member named Joseph Gaya was reportedly arrested for resisting a police raid. The charges against Gaya were later dropped.

The video, body camera footage of the emergency response following a fire alarm at Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, has been viewed more than 20 million times on social media.

Bullying is the practice of forcing someone to engage in humiliating, abusive or dangerous activities to gain acceptance into a group, and is usually illegal. This is common in fraternities, sports teams, or clubs.

Who is Joseph Gaya?

The body camera footage was released as part of discovery in the court case surrounding Joseph Gaya’s arrest. Gaya was 21 when he was arrested. It was unclear from the report whether Gaya was a student at the University of Iowa and a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

Police arrived at the Alpha Delta Phi building on the evening of November 15, 2024, and found 56 male pledgers inside the building. In body camera footage, rescuers can be seen in their flashlights.

according to arrest Court records reveal that Joseph Gaya continued to interfere with the police response throughout the night. Police repeatedly told him to leave, but he tried to keep them between the sworn students and police.

Charges against Joseph Gaya were later dropped.

This has resulted in the closure of the University of Iowa until at least July 2029. The incident was investigated by the University of Iowa Police and the University of Iowa Office of Student Responsibility.
