LONDON: Indo-Canadian author Padma Viswanathan, the English translator of an “unforgettable” Portuguese novel by Brazilian author Ana Paula Maia, was on Tuesday named longlisted for the 2026 International Booker Prize. “The Earth Underground” was described by the judges as a naked exploration of power and corruption, and is one of 13 global contenders for the literary honor. Last year, Kannada writer and activist Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi won an annual prize worth $50,000, split equally between the author and translator, for “The Lamp of the Heart.”
