The accident occurred late Saturday night on Interstate 65 near Crown Point, Indiana.

Local media reported that the Navya Gadusu student was pronounced dead by the Lake County Coroner’s Office at 12:16 a.m. Sunday.

The coroner’s office said Gadusu’s death was caused by blunt force trauma in the crash.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed its “heartfelt” condolences and said it was in contact with the family of the deceased.

The consulate said it has been in contact with the family of the deceased as well as friends and community members who are assisting those injured in the accident.

According to Indiana State Police, the crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. Saturday when a red minivan carrying seven adults drove behind a vehicle with mechanical problems at 10 to 15 mph.

The driver of the other vehicle didn’t realize how slowly the minivan was traveling and tried to swerve left to avoid it, state police said.

It eventually hit the left side of the minivan, knocking it off the road and into a ditch, state police said.

Police added that the vehicle followed by the minivan, which had mechanical issues, was not hit.

Further information revealed that the minivan only had two front seats. The remaining five people in the minivan were sitting on the mango crates and were not wearing seat belts, state police said.
