NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India on Tuesday at the swearing-in ceremony of Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh’s elected prime minister and chairman of the National Party, which returned to power in Dhaka with a landslide victory.ANI sources on Sunday confirmed that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will be accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the event. The ceremony will be held at the South Square of the National Assembly following the party’s landslide victory in the 2026 general election.Bangladesh has sent invitations to leaders of 13 countries, including India, to attend the ceremony. In August 2024, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in major riots, and relations between New Delhi and Dhaka fluctuated. She subsequently sought refuge in India and remains in exile due to security concerns.Meanwhile, with Hasina’s main rival BNP now in power in Dhaka, the trajectory of diplomacy between India and Bangladesh will be closely watched in the coming days.
