An Indian-origin truck driver has admitted he was behind the wheel playing a mobile game during a fatal crash in Canada. The fatal pile-up killed two people.29 years old Baljit Singh The Ontario resident, who was involved in a fatal pile-up on Highway 30 in Brossard near Montreal on July 19, 2022, pleaded guilty in Longueuil Court to dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.Singer was driving a 53-foot tractor-trailer and failed to slow down as he approached a traffic jam near a construction zone, causing a multi-vehicle collision. In the hour before the accident, Singh used his mobile phone 18 times and was playing online games.The crash killed 42-year-old Nancy Lefrançois and her 11-year-old son Loïc Chevalier, who were traveling in a passenger bus that collided in a pile-up. Several others suffered serious injuries, including broken bones, head trauma and internal bleeding.A report revealed that Singh had only 0.35 seconds to react before impact and said the accident may have been avoided if he had been paying attention to the road instead of his phone.Dashcam footage and evidence also showed multiple distractions, including lane weaving, traffic violations and failure to take prescribed breaks.After initially speaking to police, Singh later left Canada for India. He was arrested abroad in 2025 and brought to Canada to face charges. He apologized in court documents and is currently in custody. He will be sentenced in June. In Canada, dangerous driving causing death can result in life imprisonment.
