A 27-year-old Punjabi man has been arrested and charged after a shooting in Surrey, Canada, that police say is linked to ongoing extortion-related violence in the area.The defendant, identified as Jaskaran Saroye, was detained by the Surrey Police Racketeer Response Team following the execution of a search warrant at a residential property in the city.According to police, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on April 13 at the intersection of Avenue 94A and 127th Street, when shots were fired into an occupied home. The house was damaged but no one was injured.Surrey Police said in a statement that investigators discovered a suspicious vehicle, which led to further investigation and ultimately a court-approved search warrant. The arrest was made with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Regional Emergency Response Team and other SPS units.Saroye is accused of firing a weapon into a location with knowledge or disregard of the presence of others. He remains in custody and a bond hearing is scheduled.Surrey Police Chief Noam Lipinski called the incident very serious and warned of the dangers posed by such attacks.Lipinski called the shooting an “extremely serious crime” and said shootings into occupied homes pose a significant threat to public safety.Police also publicly released Saroye’s photo, saying it could help identify others linked to an alleged extortion network in the area. Surrey has seen an increase in extortion-related violence in recent years, with members of the South Asian community, especially those of Indian origin, often targeted, Panorama India reported.
