A man of Indian origin has been convicted of a stabbing attack in east London last year that left a woman and two children seriously injured. Kulvinder Ram, 48, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of the attempted murder of a woman and child during an attack in Dagenham in October 2024. He was also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to another child who was injured in the incident, the Press Trust of India reported. The attack left all three victims seriously injured and required surgery. One victim remains in critical condition days after doctors feared they may not survive. The court heard Ram was detained at the scene by an off-duty Metropolitan Police Special Constabulary officer who was returning home from get off work.SWAT officer Seff Serroukh said he initially thought he was witnessing a Halloween prank after spotting a woman and child running through the street covered in blood.“I quickly ran towards them and was immediately shocked by their injuries and the amount of blood they had,” Seluk said.“When I realized the kids were involved, I knew I had to act quickly.”Seluk told the court he confronted Ram outside the property and restrained him, despite having no protective gear or police back-up around him.He said: “I had no safety equipment and no colleagues to assist, but as a father and as a police officer, it is a natural instinct to respond without hesitation even if one does not know the risk.”“As I approached the house, the suspect left the house and I managed to put his hands on the ground behind his back.”He held Ram and called emergency services until on-duty police arrived.“The most important thing is that the victim survived and I’m glad that help was provided when needed,” he added.Detective Inspector Lewis Whitlock, who is leading the investigation, said police had no doubt Ramm intended to kill the victim.“Our investigation convinced us that Rahm intended to kill the individuals he targeted, and we are pleased that the jury found the same,” Whitlock said.He also praised Seluk’s actions, saying the off-duty officer likely prevented further deaths.“Without him, I have no doubt that Ram would have gone on to cause further, most likely fatal, harm,” Whitlock said. The trial heard that Ram suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia at the time of the attack and had become increasingly paranoid, believing he was being watched through cameras. However, the court found he still understood his actions.Police said his behavior had become increasingly erratic in the weeks leading up to the stabbing, allegedly including threatening to kill one of the victims.Lahm remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
