Indian-origin family plans to leave Canada after blackmail threats, firings; police yet to confirm Lawrence Bishnoi’s connection

Extortion threats are driving Peel Region families to leave Canada as police services continue to work to better handle cases that cross provincial and international borders, Toronto City News reports. Damjit, an Indian man who was targeted by an extortion gang late last year, said police did not have enough resources to fight criminals. Dharmjit said he started receiving extortion calls in October 2025. He informed the police and blocked all the numbers. But the extortion calls never stopped. On November 25, a fire broke out on his farm. Damjit said the police advised them to stay away from the residence. They did. But when they returned, so did the gunfire. “So, if the police can’t protect you, the police can’t protect you. So what do you do? They say, get out of your house, get out of your house. Where do you go? Why do you want to buy another house in the same area or the same country? It’s better to leave the country,” Dharmjit said. “They started calling me in October, asking about money. Then I informed the police. So I blocked the number, and then they started calling from another number, which I blocked. Then they came to my farm on November 25 and they opened fire at night,” he said.

Extortion against Indians has become the norm in Canada, with local governments calling on the federal government to help combat this organized crime. Indo-Canadian gangster Lawrence Bishoy is believed to be the mastermind of the operations, although he is currently in an Indian jail. The Bishnoi gang identifies the target, demands money, then shoots at the house, takes a video, then demands money again through the video, threatening to shoot inside the house the next time a fire breaks outPeel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich says he has no evidence pointing to the Bishnoi gang
