New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee On the law and order issue in the poll-bound state. Replying to the Lok Sabha debate on the 2026 Union Budget, Sitharaman said that under Mamata’s rule, “bombs, not laws” prevailed.“Bengali mein bob chalta hai, kanun nahi chalta (In Bengal, bombs, not laws, rule),” she said, sparking an uproar from opposition leaders. She criticized the chief minister for advising women to stay indoors at night instead of taking steps to improve the law and order situation in the state.
She mentioned June 2025 bomb explosion A child lost his life in Kaliganj, noting that a TMC leader was arrested in connection with the incident. West Bengal is scheduled to go to polls in the coming months.Responding to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s remarks, Sitharaman accused him of misleading the House, claiming consumption tax Taxes on milk, stationery and education.She also refuted his assertion that GST is levied even on death and clarified that funeral services were never taxed under the GST regime.The minister added that the budget contains several proposals on which the West Bengal government can participate to promote the interest of the state.
