Imran Khan’s wife undergoes eye surgery

Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, underwent surgery on her right eye at a private hospital in Islamabad, prison authorities said.

Bushra was convicted in the Qadir Trust case and is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Adiala Prison, Rawalpindi, where the cricketer-turned-politician was also sentenced in the same case.

She complained of vision loss in her right eye and was immediately examined by an ophthalmologist, according to a statement from prison authorities.

She was diagnosed with retinal detachment in her right eye and doctors recommended surgery, the statement quoted the prison director as saying.

She was allegedly admitted to a private hospital in Rawalpindi on Thursday evening where a medical examination was conducted.

Bushra has agreed to the surgery by Dr Nadeem Qureshi, a renowned retina specialist at Al Shifa Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, the statement said.

“The patient was discharged after being hospitalized for one night after the operation,” he said, adding that she had been taken back to Adiala jail.

Post-operative examinations and follow-up visits will be carried out in accordance with the doctor’s recommendations, the statement said.

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party said in a statement that Bushra was reportedly diagnosed with posterior vitreous detachment, myopia and astigmatism, calling the situation “deeply concerning.”

PTI chief Gohar Ali Khan posted on

Bushra’s family should be allowed to meet her, he said, adding that Imran Khan should also be shifted to a private hospital for eye treatment and his family should be allowed to meet him.

“The earlier the better. This is their basic right under the law,” he said. “Their health condition is so serious that every Pakistani is deeply concerned.”

In January this year, 73-year-old Khan was admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences after he complained of worsening vision in his right eye. He underwent eye surgery, which was repeated a month later.

Khan has been behind bars since his first arrest in August 2023.
