The current acting chief of staff is Army Deputy Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Christopher Raneff, a former military aide to Hegseth.

Amid the gunfire, let’s take a look at how America’s military structure functions.

How does the U.S. military structure work?

The U.S. military is part of the Department of Defense. It consists of six armed services – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force and Coast Guard. It operates specifically through a dual chain of command: administrative (organization/training) and operational (combat command).

While the President of the United States serves as Commander-in-Chief, command rests with the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

What are the key structural components?

Key structural components are:

  • Department of the Army: Army.
  • Department of the Navy: Navy and Marine Corps.
  • Department of the Air Force: Air Force and Space Force.
  • Department of Homeland Security (DHS): Coast Guard (operated under the Navy during the war).

What is the operational and administrative chain of command?

The following is the operational chain of command – President → Secretary of Defense → Unified Combatant Command (regional or functional commander).

The following is the executive chain of command: President ➔ Secretary of Defense ➔ Secretary of Military Affairs ➔ Chiefs of Service ➔ Troops.

What is the component and structural hierarchy?

Each branch has active duty (full-time) and reserve personnel (Reserves and National Guard).

Structural levels typically range from small to large organizations: squad, platoon, company, battalion, brigade, division, and corps.

Units are organized from smallest to largest to maintain clear lines of command:

  • team: 4-12 soldiers, led by a sergeant.
  • Row: 16-50 soldiers, led by a lieutenant.
  • company: 100-250 soldiers, led by a captain.
  • camp: 300-1,000 soldiers, led by a lieutenant colonel.
  • trip: 3,000-5,000 soldiers led by a colonel or brigadier general.
  • distribute: 10,000-15,000 soldiers led by a major general.
  • legions and field armies: Large-scale formations for major regional operations.

Pete Hegseth faces calls for impeachment

Rep. Yassamine Ansari (D-Ariz.) said on Monday, March 6, that she would Introducing the Articles of Impeachment be opposed to Heggs Donald Trump has been indicted for war crimes after attacking Iranian bridges, desalination plants and power plants.

Ansari wrote on

Meanwhile, reporter Scott McFarland quoted Ansari as saying, “Only Congress has the power to declare war, not a rogue president or his lackeys. Hegseth’s reckless endangerment of U.S. service members and repeated war crimes, including bombing a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, and deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure are grounds for impeachment and removal from office.”

Ansari is not the first to suggest impeaching Heges for war crimes. Last December, Rep. Shri Thanedar, a Michigan Democrat, submitted articles of impeachment against the Secretary of Defense. However, he stopped short of forcing a vote on the matter. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and other lawmakers said the attack on the country’s civilian infrastructure constituted a clear war crime.
