Himanta Biswa Sarma vows to provide free LPG cylinders for Bihu puja; Congress says violation of rules

Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma A free bottle of LPG gas was promised to everyone during Bihu and Durga Puja on Saturday, even as long queues were reported outside cooking gas dealers across the state.Sarma was speaking at a polling rally in Mamora constituency in Charadio province on Saturday. However, the election authorities said they have not received any complaint alleging violation of the model code of conduct by the chief minister.

“At Bihu and Durga Puja, we will distribute one bottle to people for free. One bottle at Bihu and another bottle at Durga Puja. The payment for these two cylinders will be made by Mama (Salma’s name),” the CM said at an election rally in support of BJP candidate Suruj Dihingia.He told the rally that if the BJP returns to power, free rice will continue, along with subsidies on dal, sugar, salt and mustard oil.Congress reacted strongly to the news, with Assam media department chief Bedabrat Bora calling it a clear violation of MCC rules. “After the election date is announced, the chief minister’s duty is primarily to maintain law, order and disaster. Although legally he cannot announce the date of the scheme or board examination results, he is doing so,” Bora claimed.Bora also expressed surprise at the EC’s “remaining silent” following the announcement.
