Due to severe weather, a tornado warning has been issued for Hattiesburg, Laurel, Collins, Sumrall, Ellisville, Seminary, Sauso and Sandersville, Mississippi. The University of Southern Mississippi also asked students to “take shelter immediately.”

NWS tornado warning

one tornado warning The measure remains in effect until 9:45 p.m. CT as dangerous storms moved through parts of northern Forrest County, eastern Covington, northern Lamar and Jones counties Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes developed along a line from near Hebron, Mississippi, to Mississippi Seminary and Sumral, Mississippi, at 9:07 p.m. Central Time. The storm system is moving eastward at approximately 45 mph, with radar showing rotation.

Potential danger

The main danger from these storms is the potential for tornadoes, which can produce dangerous flying debris. Officials warned that mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed, and roofs, windows and vehicles could be damaged. Trees may also suffer severe damage.

Areas in the storm’s path

The storm is expected to move through several southern Mississippi communities, including:

Hattiesburg, MS, Soso, MS, Hebron, MS, and Sanford, MS at approximately 9:10 PM CDT

West Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Oak Grove, Mississippi, Rawls Springs, Mississippi, and Moselle, Mississippi Around 9:15 p.m. Central Time

Laurel, Mississippi, Ellisville, Mississippi, Istabochi, Mississippi, and Moss, Mississippi at approximately 9:20 p.m. CDT

Petal, Mississippi (CDT) Around 9:25 p.m.

Sandersville, MS, Tuckers Crossing, MS, Sunrise, MS, and Macedonia, MS at approximately 9:30 PM CDT

Residents in warning areas are urged to immediately seek shelter in a sturdy building, preferably in an indoor room on the lowest floor, and to stay tuned for the latest updates from local authorities.
