‘Gunman in the stands’: First details emerge about Pawtucket rink shooting suspect

At least one person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting in the city on Monday afternoon. Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. What we know about the suspect

The suspect, a man, is now dead, according to WPRI.

Pawtucket Times reporter Brandon Melo said the footage came from the stands behind the BVS bench. A North Smithfield father reportedly took a gun away from the gunman, but the man had a second weapon. Authorities have not yet identified the shooter.

Coventry School principal Don Cowart sent an email to parents confirming a “serious incident” had occurred at the stadium.

“Information is still developing and we are actively working with event staff and local authorities to understand the situation,” Coulter wrote. “We have been informed that students are being protected at multiple locations. At this time, we are still investigating the status and location of all individuals.”

Some witnesses and local residents described chaotic scenes on social media.

One person wrote: “Please stay away from the downtown Pawtucket area! There was a mass shooting at the ice rink! A suspect is still on scene! See something, say something! Stay safe! Share the warning.”

Another added, “Damn I just saw a hundred police cars…Warwick, Providence, Cranston police heading towards Pawtucket.”

A third resident reported: “There was a shooting at the skating rink in Pawtucket, close to my apartment building. Multiple people injured. I feel like I’m reliving the shooting on Brown’s campus two months ago. But, I’m safe.”

Another person wrote: “I just drove 95 and there were at least 20 police officers flying in on 95 from the province, state, Johnston, Warwick, Cranston and North Smithfield. This is a big deal.”

Another added, “There was a shooting at the ice rink in Pawtucket. People were running into the wall in panic. I have nothing left but people reassured, stay safe and stay indoors.”
