Plattner’s campaign insists, however, that he “plucked a skull and crossbones tattoo from a wall in Croatia to honor the surviving Ramadi and his friends who were killed there,” a campaign spokesperson told The Washington Post.

The campaign also noted that Plattner underwent a comprehensive background check to join the ambassador’s security team in Afghanistan and that concerns about the tattoo never arose.
