Gordie Howe International Bridge: Canada offers U.S. share of bridge profits to get Trump nod
The United States and Canada will open the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ont., on July 27 after the Canadian government agreed to share net toll profits with the United States, officials familiar with the matter said. The agreement ends a tense standoff between the two trading partners.Canada’s $4.5 billion Detroit River bridge was built after years of opposition from the existing Ambassador Bridge owner, who recently made a large donation to a political group aligned with President Donald Trump.Under the agreement, Canada will share operating profits equal to half of operating expenses and donate the proceeds directly to a U.S.-run regional development fund, officials said. Officials said the basic text of the original agreement, which was only between Canada and Michigan, has not changed.Under the original terms, Canada would collect bridge tolls until construction costs were recouped, after which the revenue would be divided equally.(Bloomberg)
