An Indian-origin founder expressed concern about the rise in hate incidents against Indians living in the United States and called for urgent attention and support through a post on X.Anita Ratnam, India’s popular dancer and founder of Narthaki.com, described incidents involving two of her friends who faced abuse despite being born in the United States. In one case, a man born in the United States was subjected to racist remarks while riding the New York City subway, including being told to “go back to your country.” The incident highlights how this hostility can be directed against those who are born citizens.Ratnam also pointed to another incident involving an American-born man who was spat on at a Los Angeles grocery store. The case reflects how problems can go beyond verbal abuse and can escalate into physical behavior of disrespect and intimidation.Anita tagged the Indian American Advocacy Council to call for support and intervention, urging authorities and community organizations to take note of the situation. Many netizens have shared instances of themselves facing hate crimes in the United States because of being Indian. “Many people are not united. Still minding their own business. I am a victim of a hate crime. No support when brutal attacks happen. Indians are minding their own business as always,” one user wrote. “Indians need to start carrying bear spray for self-defense. Leave as soon as possible after spraying. Don’t stay,” another advised. The incidents underscore the rise in anti-India rhetoric in the United States.
