In the Gangarampur assembly, Satyendra Nath Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party defeated Goutam Das of the Trinamool Congress. Nath secured 1,05,780 votes, defeating Das by 36,987 votes. The 2026 Gangarampur elections will pit TMC’s Goutam Das against sitting MLA Satyendra Nath Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Congress fielding Jui Barman.Gangarampur is a scheduled caste reserved constituency in Dakshin Dinajpur district and falls under the Balurghat Lok Sabha seat. It covers several gram panchayat of Gangarampur city and Gangrampur and Tapan community development areas. Historically, the CPI(M) held the seat for most of the Left Front era, but its position has declined sharply since 2011.The 2016 result was particularly striking: Goutam Das defeated the BJP’s Satyendra Nath Ray by more than 10,000 votes in the race for a Congress seat – a huge margin that reflected the Congress’ remaining strength in parts of Dakshindinajpur at the time. However, 2021 has seen a stunning reversal. Satyendra Nath Ray, who switched to the BJP, defeated TMC’s Goutam Das by 4,592 votes as part of the BJP wave across the state. Therefore, the 2026 contest can be said to be a rematch, with Das now flying the TMC flag and Ray defending the seat from the BJP. In successive elections, the constituency has vacillated between the Congress, TMC and the BJP, making the constituency very unpredictable.
