New Delhi: India will update its seasonal flu vaccine to better match fast-spreading new strains, a year after a sharp early rise in flu cases in several countries.this World Health Organization Annual advice has been released for the 2026-27 Northern Hemisphere influenza season, based on global surveillance data showing new A(Type A H3N2) variant (called the K clade) becomes dominant. India, being part of the Northern Hemisphere, follows this guidance every year to decide which strains to include in the flu vaccine. The new H3N2 strain appears to spread more easily than earlier versions. While not necessarily more severe for everyone infected, its higher transmissibility has led to increased case numbers and earlier-than-usual flu activity in many areas.“The updated recommendations are timely given the rapid spread of new A(H3N2) variants around the world,” said Dr. Rommel Tickoo, chief of internal medicine at Sackett Max Hospital. “H3N2 strains are often associated with more severe illness, especially in older adults and people with other medical conditions. Because influenza viruses are constantly changing, it is critical to update the vaccine annually. Early vaccination of high-risk groups can reduce complications and hospitalizations.”WHO Updated ingredients have been recommended for the H1N1, H3N2 and B/Victoria strains for the upcoming season. Indian vaccine makers will now adjust production to match these strains to deliver doses before transmission peaks.Doctors recommend getting a flu shot before winter. Those who should be prioritized for vaccination include the elderly, pregnant women, health care workers, young children, patients with chronic diseases, the immunocompromised and adults over 50 with underlying health conditions.Seasonal influenza causes an estimated 290,000 to 650,000 respiratory deaths worldwide each year. Although India does not have a universal influenza vaccination program, experts say annual vaccination is still important for vulnerable groups. With the announcement of the updated strain, Indian regulators are expected to review and approve the revised formulation soon, allowing manufacturers to begin production ahead of the 2026-27 flu season.
