Florida couple declared dead in helicopter crash in Kenya; thieves break in their house, steal Porsche, Land Rover in less than 24 hours. Then comes a twist in court
55-year-old Henry Parra and 42-year-old Adam Hlavaty, a same-sex couple from Florida, were among the seven people who were killed when a helicopter they were in while on a safari in Kenya crashed last Wednesday. In less than 24 hours after they were declared dead and the news spread in their Florida neighborhood, thieves broke into the house of the couple and stole valuable works of art, jewelry, electronics, personal and business documents, apart from the couple’s Land Rover and Porsche SUV.According to Coral Gables police, 40-year-old Geybert Alexander Garcia and 24-year-old Melany Perdomo ransacked the home. Police said a ping from the couple’s stolen MacBook led investigators to Garcia and Perdomo.Both face multiple charges, including burglary and grand theft auto. Both suspects appeared before a judge, and they were held without bond.Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer found probable cause for the charges and ordered them to stay away from the Coral Gables home.In court, a family friend testified about the damage that the suspects left behind at the home.She said the security system was broken into and the front door was also left with extensive damage that the family has to replace, including the front lock.
The accused burglars presented a document in court claiming that they had the authorization to use the cars.
‘He was given authorization to use the vehicles’
“Your honor, you’ll see that the defendant’s got prior felony convictions for burglarizing homes, money laundering, dealing in stolen property,” a prosecutor said during Garcia’s hearing, as reported by NBC Miami. “I don’t know if this home was specifically targeted because I believe it was in the media that the victims passed away.”Garcia’s defense attorney, Paul Basile, provided a notarized document he said came from Garcia’s family that they said was from one of the alleged victims. The document allegedly granted Garcia possession of their vehicles and entrance into their home, the attorney said.“Oh I gotta see this,” Judge Mindy Glazer said. “Really? Before they went on their vacation, they decided to give Mr Garcia authorization to use their vehicles, Mr Garcia, who has a criminal history?”“Judge, I can only go by the information that’s provided by the family,” Basile responded.“Yeah, I would not give that much weight,” Glazer said.“It’s my understanding that the notary is actually a friend of the victim,” Basile said.“I’m not going to address anything until I hear from the officers for the probable cause hearing,” Glazer responded. “But I mean, it’s pretty egregious to break into somebody’s home of victims who had just perished. So I’ll consider whatever you ask based on what there’s probable cause for.”
