Flash flood warning in Atlanta: Horrifying video shows cars stranded on highway as water rises

“Crazy stuff is happening on the Atlanta Connector. Drivers on I-75/I-85 trying to get through floodwaters and getting stuck. This is near Baker Street. The driver of the white sedan climbed out of the sunroof. Several other drivers were stuck in the same area,” a local reporter wrote.

Another person who shared the video wrote: “Video shows flooding on I-75/85 near North Peachtree Street Wednesday afternoon.”

There was also a video shared with someone who wrote, “Waymo vehicle in flooding near Atlanta’s Central Park. Wonder what it will do now.”

Traffic was affected due to flash flooding in the city center. A video shows the situation in Atlanta.

“Traffic backed up 75/85 after flooding downtown,” one local page wrote. Fox 5 Atlanta report “Crews have successfully reopened all northbound lanes of the Baker Street Interchange’s Downtown Connector after heavy afternoon rain and debris-clogged storm drains left several vehicles submerged and paralyzed rush hour traffic.”

One person shared a set of photos and wrote “Just had a crazy flash flood in Atlanta!”.

Some people reacted to news of the Atlanta flooding. “Welcome to ATL. Flash flooding is real,” one wrote. Another added, “We did have scattered showers in the metro area, flooding in one area for 20 minutes and drying out in the opposite direction.” Another chimed in: “Not a drop of rain in Alpharetta.”

Many others commented that several parts were still dry. “Not a drop of it from Dacula!” one wrote. Another said, “There wasn’t even a drop of water at Woodstock.”

Another said, “My daughter is on the South Side with some coworkers, one of whom lives in Woodstock, and he can’t go through downtown right now. Hopefully he’ll be on the West Side around 285 soon.” One also questioned administrative measures to prevent waterlogging, writing “It hasn’t rained these days… DOT has spent absolutely no time making sure the highway drains are clear.”

Local reporters also shared A statement from the City of Atlanta reads:

“The government is aware that flooding has occurred in parts of the city due to heavy rainfall and changing weather conditions. City teams are actively monitoring the situation, responding to affected areas and coordinating departments to address road hazards, drainage issues and any public safety needs. We are also working closely with the Georgia Department of Transportation to monitor traffic conditions and road impacts throughout the region. Residents are encouraged to call 511 to check for real-time traffic updates before traveling.

The incident is also being monitored by the city’s new Integrated Command Center (ICC), which allows agencies to coordinate resources, monitor the situation in real time and support rapid response efforts across the city.

Residents should call the Guangdong Provincial Department of Transportation at 511 to report problems on state-maintained highways and national roads. Residents are encouraged to avoid driving in standing water, use caution when traveling, and report non-emergency issues via ATL 311. If an emergency occurs, residents should call 911.
