Fire in Oklahoma City: Massive blaze at salvage yard sends smoke toward Moore; videos surface
A massive fire has broken out at a salvage yard in southeast Oklahoma City, with residents in nearby Moore reporting seeing a large plume of smoke.
In a Facebook post, the Oklahoma City Fire Department said crews were working to contain a large debris fire at a scrapyard near 5700 S. High Ave.
“A large column of black smoke is visible from several areas of Oklahoma City,” the department said. “Firefighters are actively working to bring the fire under control.”
No injuries have been reported so far. Officials are asking people to avoid the area and give firefighters plenty of room to operate.
Witness reports
Several residents took to social media to share what they saw as the fire sent smoke across the area.
One person wrote, “I saw this when picking my kids up from school at Dove and Crossroads Mall. When I got there there was nothing, then waiting in line I looked up and saw the smoke. I hope in the end no one was hurt.”
Another added, “I used to work at standard Iron & Metal and my initial thought was they they need to remove the gas tanks from cars before shredding but it seems this yard doesn’t have a shredder so I’m not for sure what caused this.”
A third person reported, “There was 2 fires on the east side and one closer to downtown that I saw just today.”
Another resident commented, “Scrapers need to remember to take the batteries out of the cars first and this wouldn’t happen.”
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.
