More than 60 FDNY units and nearly 200 first responders arrived at the historic location on West 49th Street around 10 a.m. to put out a three-alarm fire. city ​​centeraccording to a fire department spokesman.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze from above while overcoming the difficulties of working inside a 125-by-100-foot, six-story building on Broadway. Located on Broadway, the building is more than a century old.

The theater has been presenting “The Book of Mormon” since 2011, but no performances are scheduled for Monday.

“There was just a lot of smoke coming out of the top and we were asked to leave the hotel. Hopefully no one was inside,” tourist Matt Oakley, who lives nearby, told CBS 2.

Another tourist, Krissy Giffin, told PIX 11 she was advised to evacuate her hotel near the fire.

“I put on my clothes and ran down the stairs,” she said.
