Elon Musk Widespread response to a proposed new adaptation of Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” has sparked new discussion online. After an X user suggested he finance a $100 million version of the ancient Greek epic directed by Mel Gibson, the billionaire replied: “I’m frustrated.”
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is performing strongly at the global box office just days after its release, raking in a reported $265 million worldwide. Nolan’s adaptation, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, was praised for its visuals but also criticized for its casting choices and historical interpretation.
What triggered Musk’s reaction?
X User @martianwyrdlord wrote that he wants Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to create a version of “The Odyssey” with historically accurate ships, weapons, and armor. The post also suggests using Homer’s original text, performed entirely in Homeric Greek.
Musk responded simply: “I’m frustrated.”
In another post, creator Heavy Pulp released a three-minute AI-generated sequence inspired by Homer’s epic poem, using Grok Imagine’s video generation tool.
In response to the video, Musk said, “Before this year is out, Grok Imagine will be producing a complete Odyssey movie that is historically accurate and true to Homer’s art.”

Why did The Odyssey attract criticism?
Christopher Nolan’s adaptation has become one of the most discussed films of the year, and the discussion extends far beyond its box office performance.
According to the BBC, much of the debate centered on casting decisions and the film’s “historically incorrect” adaptation. Conservatives also questioned the inclusion of transgender actor Elliot Page and rapper Travis Scott. Elon Musk has previously weighed in on social media criticism surrounding casting discussions.
Some conservative critics criticized Nolan’s decision to cast Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Conservative commentator Matt Walsh previously commented: “No one on earth actually thinks Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.'”
Walsh continued, “But Christopher Nolan knew that if he gave the role of ‘Most Beautiful Woman’ to a white woman, he would be called a racist. Nolan is technically gifted, but a coward.”
To this, Musk replied: “Yes.” In addition, he also posted on X that he believed Nolan was changing the race of the characters in “Odyssey” because he “wanted awards.”
