New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has been entrusted with resolving the high-profile property dispute between late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur and his wife Priya Kapur over the family trust related to her Rs 30,000-crore estate. As they expressed willingness for mediation, the Supreme Court on Thursday appointed the former CJI as mediator and asked both parties to explore an amicable solution. “This is a domestic dispute. Let it be confined within the family. It should not be a source of entertainment,” Justices JB Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan told them. The court asked both parties to appear before former CJI Chandrachud for mediation. “We will await the mediator’s preliminary report before taking the matter further,” the company said, posting on the matter on August 12. On April 27, the court had sought response from Priya Kapur and others in a suit filed by Sunjay Kapur’s mother seeking directions to declare the family trust “invalid”. She claimed in her petition that the trust, established in October 2017, was the product of “forged, fabricated and fraudulent” documents. Legal proceedings regarding control of the estate and assets are pending in the Delhi High Court and a petition filed in the Supreme Court seeks to maintain the status quo on transfer of all properties of the trust.
