DU dismisses Rahul’s allegation of using interviews to eliminate students

New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) has dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations that it used interviews to weed out students. In a post on Friday Evening“If the Leader of Opposition is referring to recruitment (e.g. teaching posts), then universities have recently recruited thousands of teachers across various categories. We strongly object to such comments as they create a non-conducive environment in universities. Leader of Opposition should verify facts before making such statements. @EduMinOfIndia,” it added. This was in response to remarks by Gandhi, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, who alleged that DU was eliminating students on the basis of caste.“I went to Delhi University. Interviews are just a way of weeding out students. They ask you what your caste is and then you fail in the interview,” Gandhi said while addressing a function to mark the birth anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram in Lucknow on Friday.Referring to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the Congress leader further said, “Come out the list of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Those Pracharaks and senior people in the organization, you will not find a single OBC, not a single Dalit, not a single Adivasis in it. This is completely against the Constitution.” This has sparked further controversy, with the Indian National Teachers’ Congress (INTEC) and some DU professors, including members of the academic and executive council, pointing out that public records show that in several departments of the university, despite a large number of teaching posts being recruited under the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories, qualified candidates were declared “Not Suitable (NFS)” after the interview stage.
