Two people were shot multiple times Friday morning near the Wake County Courthouse in downtown Raleigh, officials said.

The shooting happened in an alley next to the courthouse between Fayetteville and Salisbury streets. local specialty store WRAL Reports said a man and a woman were injured.

Authorities said the suspect was in custody and determined there was no ongoing threat to the public.

what happened?

Raleigh police said officers received a report of a shooting near the Wake County Justice Center, 330 South Salisbury Street, at around 3:02 p.m. When officers arrived, they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

In a post on X, police urged the public to avoid the area if the situation becomes serious. In a later update, they confirmed the suspect was in custody and there was no ongoing threat to the community.

“Our officers on scene downtown are responding to a shooting on Fayetteville Street. The community is advised to avoid the area at this time. Please stay tuned to our social media and we will update as more information becomes available,” police wrote in the initial post.

In a subsequent update, police confirmed, “There is currently no ongoing threat to the community. We have a suspect in custody.”

Martin Street was temporarily closed between Fayetteville and Salisbury streets, and the courthouse was briefly blocked during the response, WRAL reported.

witness account

A witness who was inside the courthouse told WRAL that he heard gunshots and later walked out of the courthouse and saw a woman lying on the ground.

“It happened in an alley,” he told the outlet. “Then the police came and the ambulance came.”

He added that when the shots rang out, people inside the courthouse were stunned and looked out the windows. He said vehicles could not pass due to the police blockade.

Authorities have not released details about the victim’s condition and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
