Reports suggest that US President Donald Trump’s image may appear on redesigned US passports, sparking fresh controversy. The move would break with long-standing global practice.The U.S. State Department is developing a limited-edition passport that will feature Trump’s photo on the inside cover, according to a report cited by Fortress. The image is said to be taken from his second inaugural portrait and placed on the Declaration of Independence along with the president’s golden signature.If approved, it would mark the first time a sitting U.S. president’s image has appeared on a passport. Modern U.S. passports have never featured a presidential portrait, nor do passports issued by other countries feature such a feature.The proposal was criticized by opposition leaders. “It is ridiculous to put Donald Trump’s face on U.S. passports,” Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi said, adding that “these documents represent the American people, not the hubris of one man.”Traditionally, U.S. passports are issued in the name of the Secretary of State rather than the President. Early versions bore the signatures of the issuing officials but no images of political leaders.The redesign is planned in conjunction with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Other changes are also being considered, including updated designs for coins and government materials featuring Trump’s image.Under the proposal, the back cover of the passport would feature a more traditional patriotic image, a detail from a famous painting of the Declaration of Independence. However, the new version is expected to be produced in limited quantities, with only 25,000 copies planned, rather than a full rollout.The current passport design, launched in 2021, includes key moments and icons in American history. It includes images of Francis Scott Key observing the bombing of Fort McHenry, as well as lines from the American national anthem. The back cover features images of space exploration and quotes about freedom from author Anna Julia Cooper.Trump’s reported push to have his likeness included in official documents is not the only such move during his second term. His name and image have been added to various government-related initiatives and properties, including proposed currency changes, large banners hanging on federal buildings and branding associated with public services.Some institutions have also seen Trump-related name changes or changes, while launching new programs named after him. These include premium residency programs such as Trump Gold and Trump Platinum, which are promoted as fast-track options for applicants willing to pay high fees. He also plans to build a $300 million White House ballroom as an expansion of the old building.
