Donald Trump, Zelensky discuss Patriot production, Russia peace talks at White House
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky

President of the United States Donald Trump Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a closed-door meeting at the White House on Tuesday focused on expanding Ukraine’s defense capabilities, including the production of Patriot missile interceptors, and efforts to revive stalled peace talks with Russia. The meeting in the Oval Office came ahead of the funeral of the late Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, weeks after Trump announced at a NATO summit in Ankara that the United States would grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriot air defense systems – a long-standing demand from Kyiv. After the meeting, Zelensky described the meeting as “very good” and thanked the Trump administration for its continued support.“The President and I discussed a Patriot interceptor production license and some other ideas that might be helpful. We also talked about diplomacy – it is important to reinvigorate the diplomatic process,” Zelensky posted on social media.White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt described the meeting as “positive and productive.”

Discuss Patriot production, defense cooperation

Discussions focus on strengthening Ukraine’s ability to produce advanced defense systems domestically as Russia continues its missile and drone attacks more than four years after its invasion of the country.Zelensky said the two leaders discussed Trump’s pledge to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot missile interceptors under license, Reuters reported.“We discussed with the president a license to produce interceptors for the Patriots and other ideas that might help,” Zelensky said on Telegram.Later in the day, Zelensky also met with executives from defense giant Lockheed Martin, saying Ukraine and the company were already working on solutions to “move to joint production as soon as possible.”Luke Coffey, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, told The Associated Press that expanding production of Patriot interceptors would benefit not only Ukraine but the United States and its allies as global demand for the system continues to grow.

Push to restart diplomacy with Russia

The leaders also discussed resuming diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia.According to Reuters, Trump intends to discuss the peace process with Zelensky, and a White House official said that “it is time to end the war.”Zelensky said a new round of diplomacy was an important part of the discussion.“We also discussed diplomacy – it is important to strengthen the diplomatic process,” he said.U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner agreed to visit Ukraine for the first time as part of efforts to resume mediation with Russia. Zelensky said last week that he had discussed the prospect of resuming peace talks with both officials.

Relations between Trump and Zelensky improve

The meeting underscored the improving relationship between Trump and Zelensky after a rocky start to Trump’s second term. The two leaders clashed during Zelensky’s earlier visit to the White House, but relations have warmed in recent months as Ukraine seeks to strengthen ties with the Trump administration while continuing to resist Russian attacks.Relations have improved as Ukraine steps up attacks on Russian oil infrastructure and seeks closer defense cooperation with Washington.

Graham’s funeral and sanctions push

Zelensky’s visit coincides with the funeral of one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters in Washington, Senator Lindsey Graham. After attending the funeral, Ukraine’s president plans to meet with U.S. senators on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers are preparing to vote on a bipartisan sanctions package against Russia that Graham supported during his lifetime. The proposed legislation would impose tariffs on goods from Russia’s five largest buyers of oil and gas, including China and India, and expand sanctions targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior officials, financial institutions and energy projects.

Ukraine raises Russian and Iranian concerns

Before the meeting, Zelensky also claimed that Russia had been assisting Iran by providing satellite images of U.S. military bases in the Gulf, claiming there was a “clear correlation” between the images and subsequent attacks by Iran. However, Trump downplayed the importance of such Russian aid.“I don’t think they’re doing that, certainly not at a high level,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday. “Even if they did, it would have little impact.”Ukraine attacked at least one Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea over the weekend, sparking a diplomatic exchange between the foreign ministers of Iran and Ukraine.Ukraine insists its action was only to defend itself against Russian aggression and did not target civilian vessels.
