The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill proposed to reserve 33% seats for women in the legislature and increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha to 816, but the bill was defeated.
The proposal seeks to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816 based on the 2011 census to achieve reservation for women ahead of the 2029 assembly elections. It also plans to expand the number of seats in state and union territory assemblies to match the quota.
