Department of Homeland Security shuts down as U.S. government faces funding crunch over disagreements over ICE raids

The latest shutdown is the third time in the past six months that parts of the U.S. government have shut down. With the latest government shutdown, several federal workers across the United States may lose their paychecks.

The shutdown is expected to last weeks as Congress recesses and Democrats demand new restrictions on immigration officials’ tactics, but no agreement has yet been reached.

While most Department of Homeland Security functions will be affected by the latest developments, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration will continue to operate, the Associated Press reported.

As a result, immigration raids, citizenship processing, airport security, cybersecurity and Coast Guard activities will continue during the shutdown.

While the closure goes into effect Saturday, DHS staff have been asked to report to work and begin an “orderly shutdown” on their next regular shift.

Democrats said they would not help approve more funding for the Department of Homeland Security before imposing new restrictions on federal agents following the killings of Alex Pretty and Renee Goode in Minneapolis last month.

Although the White House has been negotiating with Democrats, the two sides have been unable to reach an agreement. Democrats are expected to prepare a revised list of demands and send them to the White House.
