NEW DELHI: Opposition parties have accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of asking people to adopt Covid-like austerity measures in the wake of the crisis in West Asia, saying he always seeks sacrifices from people to avoid taking responsibility for his failures. They also accused him of duplicity and asked why he claimed “everything was fine” during a poll just days ago.Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said the prime minister’s demands on the dos and don’ts were “not preachy but proof of failure”. He said: “For 12 years, he has brought this country to the point where the public now has to be told what to buy, what not to buy, where to go and where not to go. “Every time, they put the blame on someone else so they can get away with it.” The compromised Prime Minister is no longer able to run the country. “Congress President Mallikarjun Haq said India’s economy is in a slump and food security faces real threats. Party MP Manikam Tagore said, “Modi is repackaging economic failure as moral advice.”SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the government of spreading fear instead of using its endless resources to tide over the crisis. He asked why Modi could not remember the crisis when the BJP leaders were on thousands of chartered flights and staying in hotels for campaigning. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav mocked Modi for saying “the opposition will snatch your mangalsutra” during the 2024 elections, two years after asking people to stop buying gold.
